Periodontal disease, also called alveolar pyorrhea, is a bacterial infection that destroys the attachment fibers and supporting bone that hold the teeth in the mouth. The initial symptoms of periodontal disease include swelling and bleeding of the gums, receeding gums, and exudate (pus) from the gums. Left untreated, these diseases can lead to tooth loss. As periodontal disease shows no symptoms prior to the advanced stagte, early treatment is important.
